One of my favorite things about the Hannibal show is how they’ll discover a fucked up body and Jack Crawford will aggressively throw out ideas over the examination table and its all intense as they pan into Will who is shaking like a wet chihuahua as he quavers out something like “he’s not taking trophies… he’s uhh… he’s consuming them… eating them, Jack” before it cuts to Hannibal cooking a little scrambled egg set to gay piccolo music
i know it’s #trendy to shit on popular tv shows and movies but breaking bad is genuinely excellent storytelling and d&d quite literally want what vince gilligan has
i’m rewatching breaking bad currently, originally for a paper i had to write and now finishing it because my mother got hooked while i was watching it in the living room, so i was really able to understand the sheer difference in quality between this show and the final season of game of thrones (which i watched as it aired during this) and it really helped me to understand how difficult it is to realistically portray a slow decline into madness on television and how bad it can turn out if you don’t put the proper amount of time into it. breaking bad takes place in-universe over a period of two years, but the show aired for five seasons. through that time, we see walter slowly declining, going from someone the audience roots for to someone who becomes a complete and total monster. and although that transformation is relatively short in-universe, the audience believes it because of how it is drawn out for us, and we can see how each relatively small thing - for example, going from killing someone who was going to kill his family in season one to killing someone he percieved as a threat to his partner to ordering someone to kill someone innocent but made him disposable in season three - builds and builds until it’s completely believeable that he would kill people who are just sort of in his way. breaking bad, contrary to what people seem to think, isn’t a perfect show. but if nothing else, the writing is always solid and the character arcs consistently make sense and the pacing always works. d&d clearly wanted daenerys targaryen to be walter white - someone who goes from someone the audience can root for to a complete monster. instead, there’s a shocking, unrealistic character flip that audiences seem to universally believe was uncharacteristic and completely hate.
